Recruiter Information
- Share about TeachBeyond’s Mission: Raise awareness about the work of TeachBeyond and highlight how others can get involved.
- Acquire New Leads: Present current openings and invite others to join the work. Gather contact information for individuals who may be interested in serving with TeachBeyond.
- Acquire Influencers: Engage with professors, pastors, and others who would be willing to share about TeachBeyond with their networks. Influencers identify with TeachBeyond’s vision and agree to receive occasional updates to share with others. (You can acquire an influencer by asking this question: Would you be willing to receive periodic emails from TeachBeyond about specific opportunities and share those with others who might be interested?) Submit these names and contact information to serve@teachbeyond.org.

- Quick Explanation: TeachBeyond recruits, trains, and sends educators to serve in educational ministry around the world.
- Serving with TeachBeyond varies greatly!
- Various roles: We are certainly looking for certified, experienced teachers! However, there are also many non-teaching roles (residence life, administration, counseling, maintenance, etc.) and positions for non-certified teachers.
- Various settings:
- K-12 international schools (MK and expat schools)
- K-12 national schools (English language schools for nationals)
- “LinGo” English Language Learning (English Camps, language centers)
- Informal education (music, training, seminars, etc.)
- Teacher training
- Higher education
- Various locations: We work with established schools and programs all over the world – Latin America, Europe, Middle East, Africa, and Asia.
- Various time commitments: There are opportunities for full-time, short-term, or part-time ongoing service (associate members).
- History with Black Forest Academy
- TeachBeyond used to be Janz Team Ministries, a singing quartet from Canada that moved to Germany after WWII for music/evangelism outreach. BFA was formed for the children of Janz Team missionaries and became a primary focus for the mission.
- In 2009, the name was changed to TeachBeyond to focus on having a global impact for Christ through education-based mission
- Relational emphasis
- TeachBeyond was founded as a family mission and continues to be an international community.
- Mobilization Coaches walk through the entire process with applicants, from first inquiry to departure for the field.
- Member Care is available throughout duration of service.
- Ask questions to determine areas of interest:
- “Is there any specific part of the world that interests you?”
- “Are you looking for a specific role or position?”
- “Have you thought about whether you would like to teach English natives or language learners?”
- Collect their name and email address (this is key!), as well as any other pertinent information. Mention that someone will follow up with them soon.
- Whenever possible, leave materials with key individuals, such as education professors, campus ministry leaders, church staff, etc. It may be helpful to assemble several packets of information ahead of time to give to these individuals.
- Focus on building a relationship rather than sharing all of the details about TeachBeyond. Share personal stories whenever possible!
- TeachBeyond Orientation happens every June at Wheaton College in IL.
- Don’t avoid the “elephant” of finances:
- Ministry Partner Development (support raising) should be conveyed realistically and positively.
- The amount to raise varies depending on cost of living and whether the school provides a stipend. TeachBeyond walks through this process with them, providing coaching, training, and accountability. (Be aware that this may have changed significantly since you began your service with TeachBeyond.)
- TeachBeyond allows members to raise up to $350/month per individual for student loan payments. All other debt (except for home mortgage) must be liquidated before going overseas.
- Potential concerns of first-year/uncertified teachers
- TeachBeyond offers teacher training and mentoring
- JumpStart is a one-day teacher training session before orientation (classroom management, lesson planning, etc.)
- There are also non-teaching positions available
- How long do I have to commit to going?
- For most full-time positions, we ask for a 2-year commitment. There can be arranged for shorter amounts of time, but this allows for cultural transition and adjustment to the role, as well as consistency for the schools with which we partner.
- How much money do I need to raise?
- It depends on the placement. Some schools/programs offer partial salaries or stipends for housing or airfare. However, in general, we raise money to keep the cost of the school down, particularly for missionary families. b. Support estimates are provided on the Opportunity Board.
- Should I defer my student loans?
- We wouldn’t recommend it. A single can raise up to $300/month to be paying on loans.
- There are many placements that offer stipends to make this more feasible.
- How do I decide where I’m going?
- TeachBeyond won’t place you somewhere randomly! We would love to hear more about your interests, skills, and passions, and take a look at the options of openings.
- If you already know the school where you want to serve, we will start from there.
- Will I be all by myself?
- Established ministry fields have several TeachBeyond members at each school. Only new or unique assignments would be settings without a team. We value relationships and seek to place new teachers with others. Your team helps orient you to your surroundings and provides emotional and spiritual support.
- I’m married, but my spouse isn’t a teacher. What could they do?
- Schools require many different types of professions to run. Business managers, coaches, dorm parents, IT, HR, marketing… There are many non-teaching roles that spouses could potentially hold. It is our practice to have both spouses apply.
- How long does the application process take?
- Our application process is quite streamlined, and motivated applicants can be processed in a few weeks.
If you recruit on a college campus or at an event, use the Inquiry Cards (or plain 3×5 note cards!) to gather information about each individual. You can even pass these around a classroom, encouraging only interested students to fill them out. It is most important that we have their name and email address, but other information is helpful. Write any additional notes on the card if you have talked with someone.
Please enter this information into this Excel spreadsheet [insert here]. Save with the name appropriate info: Location_Date.exl and email to serve@teachbeyond.org. We will follow up from there!
If you meet someone interested in TeachBeyond in another circumstance, simply email his or her contact information to serve@teachbeyond.org at your earliest convenience.
In your Recruitment Starter Kit, we have provided a small amount of basic TeachBeyond literature for you to use in informal settings and one-on-one meetings. If you are planning to recruit at a college/university, conference/event, or other large group setting, we would love to send you more materials! Please email us at materials@teachbeyond.org with details about the event and requested quantities of desired materials (if you have an estimate).
Materials currently available:
- TeachBeyond trifold brochures: This is the basic brochure that we give to almost anyone interested.
- LinGo brochures: For those interested in English as outreach (especially TESOL/TEFL students)
- Short-Term Opportunities brochures: For underclassmen or those only interested in shorter opportunities
- Beyond Borders rack card: For those who are interested in serving refugees/displaced peoples

- Mobilization Process rack card (infographic on back): For those who are more seriously considering TeachBeyond and would like an overview of next steps
- Support Raising rack card: Provides an overview about support raising, especially helpful for those who seem hesitant about this
- Inquiry cards: Name and email address are most essential; may also use online form to collect information
- TeachBeyond pens
- Branded table cloth
- Pop-up display banners
- Contact Career Services to request a table for on-campus recruiting. If you are representing TeachBeyond at a specific event, the TeachBeyond mobilization team should be taking care of this for you. When you have confirmed a day for recruiting, please inform serve@teachbeyond.org so that we can add this to our recruiting calendar.
- Sharing in classes is a great way to share widely about TeachBeyond and generate traffic at the display table. Here is a sample email you can use to write to the education department, but we’d also encourage you to explore opportunities to share with other departments, such as TESOL, music education, missions, or intercultural studies.
Dear [Education Department Chair/Administrator/Contact],
My name is NAME, and I serve with TeachBeyond. TeachBeyond connects people with opportunities to serve in educational settings all around the world. We primarily place teachers but also recruit for other school-related positions. [Explain previous experience] and now I am excited to connect with people who are interested in working in schools overseas!
I will be on campus at SCHOOL on DATE. I am wondering if it would be possible for me to share briefly in any education classes to describe the mission of TeachBeyond and inform students that I’ll be on campus that day so that I can connect with those who are interested in teaching internationally.
Which education classes meet on DAY and at what times? Would you be able to either put me in contact with those professors or forward this email to them?
Thank you for considering this! I look forward to hearing from you soon.
